_______

Psalms: The Big Book Of Emotions Lessons Overview

MEMORY VERSE:

“All you nations, praise the Lord. All you people on earth, praise him.
Great is his love for us. The Lord is faithful forever. Praise the Lord.” Psalm 117:1-2 (NIRV)

Lessons:

Anxiety

Scripture: Psalm 1

In this psalm, David talks about the difference between people who choose God’s way and those who don’t. Choosing God’s way leads to the peace and confidence of a tree planted by water.  But choosing to ignore God’s way leads to chaos and confusion like leaves in the wind.

Objective: Kids will learn, “When I feel anxious, I can turn to God for guidance.”

Sadness

Scripture: Psalm 6

David was very sick and sad. He thought that God had left him. Instead of just giving up on his relationship with God, he cried out to God for comfort.

Objective: Kids will learn, “I can talk to God when I’m sad and he will comfort me.”

Confidence

Psalm 19

This psalm praises the glory of God.  It reminds us that we need only to look up at the sky and be amazed by the heavens that God has created to know that God is worthy of our trust.  If our faith is the God who created the entire universe, we can be confident that he will never let us down.

Objective: Kids will learn, “I can be confident because of God’s power, not my own.”

Peace

Psalm 23

Before David was a king, he was a shepherd. In this psalm, he is looking back fondly on this time in his life. He is reflecting on the peace he felt.

Objective: Kids will learn, “God gives us peace even in hard times.”

Loneliness

Psalm 25

King David had to flee into exile when his son Absalom took over his throne. After a long struggle, Absalom died and David was heartbroken. He went into exile to mourn his son.

Objective: Kids will learn, “God is there when I feel alone.”

Memory Verse 2:Lord who rules over all, blessed is the person who trusts in you.” Psalm 84:12 (NIV)

Guilt

Psalm 51; 2 Samuel 12:1-13

David was in a season of living selfishly, taking what didn’t belong to him and even causing a friend to be killed. A prophet named Nathan told David a story to help him understand the pain he was causing. David repented and turned back to God.

Objective: Kids will learn: “I can confess my sins to God.”

Anger

Scripture: Psalm 59; 1 Samuel 19:9-13

David had every right to be angry. Saul had sent men to kill him. But instead of lashing out, David took his anger to God. He wrote a psalm asking God to get rid of his enemies.

Objective: Kids will learn, “God can handle my anger.”

Thankfulness

Psalm 138, 2 Sam 7:15-29

David had just been crowned king of Israel, a promise fulfilled after years of waiting. He was overwhelmed at God’s faithfulness, and he thanked him in prayer. David also wrote many Psalms of thanks to God throughout his life.

Objective: Kids will learn, “I can thank God everyday for all He has done.”

Fear

Psalm 91

David went head-to-head against an actual giant, but he never even flinched. He didn’t let his fear overcome him. He trusted in God.

Objective: Kids will learn, “When I am afraid, I can trust in God.”

Joy

Psalm 84

In this psalm the writer is filled with joy thinking about dwelling in the house of the Lord. The writer describes the peace and joy of being in the Lord’s presence and how those who put their hope in God can experience that joy even as they journey to be there. The author ends this psalm by reminding us that all who put their trust in God are blessed.

Objective: Kids will learn, “I can have joy when I put my trust in Jesus.”

Each Lesson Includes:
  • Make It Stick! Parent Sheet - so you can let mom and dad know what kids are learning each week and look like a rockstar teacher who's thought of everything.
  • Memory Verse - so that you can make sure kids are getting Scripture in their minds and hearts every single week and you can feel like each lesson was a success even when it seems like 90% of your lesson time is spent saying things like "calm down", "let's be quiet", "hands to yourself!"
  • Skit or Puppet Show - so you have a way to easily connect the lesson with your hands-on and visual learners. No drama team? No problem! Just hand the script to the kids. They'll have a blast and think you're the coolest.
  • Craft Activity - so you can give kids a physical reminder of the Bible lesson (and give yourself an activity to keep them busy until mom and dad come back!)
  • Game - so kids don't leave and say church was BORING! Games are so important to help keep kids engaged. Our large group games always include a "What's The Point" section to help you connect the game to the lesson.
  • Large Group Lesson - so you can present the Bible story in a clear and fun way, which means now you can enjoy Saturday nights instead of stressing over putting a lesson together!
  • Small-Group Discussion - so you can find out who was paying attention and who was talking to their neighbor.  Just kidding, this is a great way for you to build deeper relationships with your kiddos after each lesson, which means you're going to care about them so much you'll cry like a baby when they graduate and go to middle school :(
  • More! - Yes, there is even more than all of that so that you can easily put together the perfect lesson for your ministry each weekend, which means no more agonizing over how to adjust complicated lesson plans.
