Mother's Day is just around the corner, and we should begin preparing ways to incorporate this holiday in our kids' ministries. Through interactive activities, we have some great ideas on how to engage children in a meaningful Mother's Day service that celebrates moms!
In this article, you will discover fresh ways to use stories, crafts, and songs to help kids celebrate mom as the hero that she is. We've also included some bonus tips with ways to engage kids in sharing and involve moms in the service.
Why Mom Deserves Recognition
Begin the children's service with a shout-out to all the moms out there. Ask any volunteers or teachers who are moms to stand up and give them a round of applause. Express the fact that moms are those everyday heroes who show up for us. They prepare lunches, take us to activities, give us hugs, and so much more.
Bonus tip: Ask a few kids to share one awesome thing about their mom, or save this sharing time for a small group discussion. Next, jump right into your first activity of creating a gift for mothers or mother figures (if a child has another guardian taking care of them).
4 Fun Mother's Day Service Ideas
DIY Appreciation Gifts for Mom
We have a few ideas that your kids can easily make for their mother.
Ribbon Braided Bracelets
Supplies Needed
- Ribbon or embroidery floss of various colors
- Scissors
- Tape (to help hold bracelets in place while braiding)
- Beads
Provide multiple colors of ribbon precut into 8-inch pieces. Have kids choose three colors, tie a knot at the top to connect the ribbons, and braid them to the bottom, adding another knot. You can also add some embellishments by providing heart beads that kids can add in while they braid the bracelets.
Fill in the Blank Mother's Day Poem
Supplies Needed
- Markers
- Stickers
- Printed poem sheets for each child
Print out this Mother's Day poem and ask kids to personalize it with their own words.
MOM, you are my hero!
Every day, you take the time to ____________.
My favorite thing we do together is ______________.
I'm thankful to have a mom like you because _____________________________________.
Love, ______________
Give kids markers and stickers to create a pretty border around their poems!
Flowering Cactus Handprint Craft
Supplies Needed
- Washable paint, including green!
- Markers
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Paper, poster boards, or canvases for all students
- Construction paper
Have kids use their hands to paint! First, make a green handprint to look like a cactus plant. Next, using all different colors, ask kids to dip their fingertips in paint to put flower pedals and the end of each green handprint finger to look like a flower. Finally, have kids cut out construction paper into a vase shape and glue it to cover the bottom section of the handprint to make it look like the cactus is in a flower pot.
Ask kids to write, "I'm growing and blooming into the best version of me because I have an amazing MOM!" Be sure kids sign their names somewhere on their craft.
Mother's Day Service Idea: Bible Stories about Strong Mothers
There are many stories in the Bible to choose from. Here are a few great choices to read for Mother's Day:
Mary's Song of Praise
Luke 1:46-55
Mary was humble and trusted God, and He provided! A strong mother is someone strong enough to admit that she needs God. In her humility and weakness, she becomes strong in the Lord!
Hagar & Ishmael
Genesis 16:6-16
Abraham and Sarai enslaved a woman named Hagar. After Sarai mistreated her, Hagar ran away. An angel of the Lord showed up and let Hagar know that God sees her and cares for her. She trusted God and returned to Abram and Sarai to have her baby.
Hagar was a strong mom because she put her child Ishmael first and did what was best for him by trusting God to help provide for her.
Elizabeth & John
Luke 1:57-66
A strong mom is someone who can stand up for what is right and be a good example to their child. They are people who obey God even when other people can't understand why they are making those choices. Elizabeth obeyed God's instructions and named her son John, even though it went against other people's expectations and traditions.
After reading these stories, explain to your students how the Biblical mothers were strong because they trusted and obeyed God! Encourage the children to discuss how their moms and the other women in their lives are also strong. How do these women trust and obey God?
Mother's Day Service Idea: Super Mom Game
Get kids up and moving with a fun game of SUPER MOM!
Before You Start
Much like the game Mother May I, ask a kidmin volunteer to be the Super Mom. It will be their job to give directions and permission when kids ask to do things. Challenge the Super Mom to be like the moms in the Bible, providing God-honoring directions and only giving permission to God-honoring activities.
How to Play
Begin by having the Super Mom shout out a direction. For example, she might say, "Give a friend a high five," Dance in place," or "Do five jumping jacks."
Next, kids raise their hands. The Super Mom calls on one of them. The child asks, "Super Mom, may I ___________." It will be the Super Mom's job to discern yes or no.
After a few rounds, you can switch out the Super Mom with another volunteer.
Mother's Day Service Idea: A Special Mother's Day Song
Gather kids together to teach them a quick and easy Mother's Day song they can perform for their moms. Practice singing the song together several times so kids will remember how to sing it for their mom in the car or at home. Hand out lyrics to the song so they can read the words if they forget them.
Here are two options you can use:
The More I Think of My Mom
To the tune of "The More We Get Together."
The more I think of my mom, of my mom, of my mom,
The more I think of my mom, the happier I'll be.
Cause my mom is the best, she loves me, she's there for me.
The more I think of my mom, the happier I'll be.
The more I think of my mom, of my mom, of my mom,
The more I think of my mom, the happier I'll be!
Mother Tells Me To Do This
To the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."
Mother tells me to do this.
Mother tells me, 'Don't do that.'
I know that she knows what's best,
Even when I sometimes forget.
Mother, I'll try to listen well
Because I love you, and you're swell!
Bonus tip: Ask parents to wait in the hallway during pickup time, and instead of dismissing kids, invite them in so kids can't perform the song they learned for their mom!
