The Bible’s Second Most Valuable Players!
This sports-themed series looks at some of the Bible’s SVPs (Second-most Valuable Players). Their faith and actions will help kids see the value of “putting it all on the field” for Jesus – the real MVP.
_______
All Stars Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview
Lessons 1-4:
Memory Verse: “All who take part in the games train hard. They do it to get a crown that will not last. But we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” 1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIRV)
Basketball
Scripture: Acts 9:19b-25, Saul in Damascus
A skilled player might try a cross over to outsmart his opponent and get the ball into the basket. When Saul (Paul) had a major life crossed over from being against Jesus to preaching about Jesus, he developed some very dangerous opponents. His teammates came up with a plan to save Saul that involved putting Saul himself in the basket.
Objective: Kids will learn “God's SVPs rely on the Lord in all circumstances.”
Soccer
Scripture: Nehemiah 2:17-20, 4:10-20 - Nehemiah
GGGOOOOOAAAALLLLL! For soccer players it’s all about the goal. When God called Nehemiah to rebuild the wall in Jerusalem he faced all kinds of challenges and opposition. But Nehemiah trusted the plan God had put on his heart and he kept his eyes on the goal.
Objective: Kids will learn “God's SVPs trust in God’s plan.”
Track and Field
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:32-50, David and Goliath
When an athlete steps on the track to run a race, they may be thinking about all the people watching and what they will think of them IF they can win. When David stepped out on the field that day, he knew that he had already won the victory. God was fighting on his side. When we commit our ways to God, we can be confident that he has already given us the victory.
Objective: Kids will learn “God’s SVPs live not for themselves, but for God.”
Cheer
Scripture: Exodus 15:19-21, Miriam Leads Worship
Cheer is all about exciting the crowd in support and praise of the team. Over the years, cheer has become a sport in its own right. After God saved the Israelites by parting the Red Sea, Miriam led the cheer team in praising and worshipping the Lord.
Objective: Kids will learn “God’s SVPs recognize God is worthy of all the praise.”
Lessons 5-8:
Memory Verse: “Be humble in front of the Lord. And he will lift you up.” James 4:10 (NIRV)
Wrestling
Scripture: Genesis 32:22-32, Jacob Wrestles with God
Jacob went through life thinking he was the best, the brightest, the most important. Then came the day when Jacob met his match (and more!) and locked into a wrestling match that would change his life.
Objective: Kids will learn “God’s SVPs stay humble and grateful.”
Baseball
Scripture: Exodus 17:8-16, Amalekites Defeated
When baseball players step up to the plate, they must keep a firm grip on the bat if they have any hope of hitting a home run. When the Israelites had gone out to fight the enemy, they had success as long as Moses held onto the bat (staff) and kept his arms up. When that became difficult Aaron and Hur stepped up to help Moses from “dropping the ball.”
Objective: Kids will learn “God’s SVPs aren’t afraid to offer help or to ask for help.”
Football
Scripture: Judges 7:1-8, 17-22, Gideon Defeats Midian
Every football team has a series of plays that players have to memorize before they step out onto the field. Even then, the quarterback may “call an audible” at the last minute. When Gideon led his troops against the Midianites, God called several audibles that led the Israelites to a resounding victory!
Objective: Kids will “God's SVPs know God’s ways are not always our ways.”
Swimming
Scripture: John 21:1-14, Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
A swimmer needs incredible focus and drive to keep going until they reach their goal. When Peter saw Jesus once more after the Resurrection, he jumped in the water and swam with focus toward the goal – His Savior.
Objective: Kids will learn “God's SVPs remember who the MVP is.”

-
Memory Verse - so that you can make sure kids are getting Scripture in their minds and hearts every single week and you can feel like each lesson was a success even when it seems like 90% of your lesson time is spent saying things like "calm down", "let's be quiet", "hands to yourself!"
-
