Toys Can Teach Us About Serving God!

All kids love toys.  Most toy boxes are full of many different toys.  We like to play with different toys for different reasons, but they are all used for one main purpose: to play.  All through the Bible God used very different people to carry out his main purpose: to let the world know who God is and how much he loves us.  These lessons will use common toys to teach kids Bible stories about very different people in the Bible who all have something to teach us about living out God’s main purpose.

Toy Bible Stories 12-Week Children's Ministry Curriculum Overview:

Memory Verse:

You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it.1 Corinthians 12:27

Lessons:

1. Cowboy – David may have seemed like a cowboy showing up for duel at the OK Corral when he walked out to face Goliath, but David wasn’t trusting his aim, or any weapon to win this battle. David was trusting God. David reminds us that when we face a challenge or a tough choice, we should pray and ask God for his help.
Bible Lesson: 1 Samuel 17:40-50 David and Goliath
Main Point: When I play, I can remember to pray everyday.

2. Space Ranger – Almost any space toy you get will involve some kind of space ship. It’s hard to get through space without ship! This lesson is about one of the most famous ships in the Bible - the ark that God told Noah to build.
Bible Lesson: Genesis 6:9-22 Noah obeys God and builds the ark.
Main Point: When I play, I can remember God is who I obey.

3. Slinky – The slinky is a fun toy to play with because you can stretch it out really far and when you let it go it will come right back together. People, however don’t like to feel stretched out or feel like they’re being asked to do more than they can handle. That’s exactly how Gideon felt when God asked him to lead an army and then told him he had to make his army even smaller before the battle! But Gideon trusted God, and did things God’s way and God helped Gideon win in an amazing way.
Bible Lesson: Judges 6:36-40 and Judges 7:19-22
Main Point: When I play, I can remember if I trust God, it will be okay.

4. Barbie – Many girls like to play with Barbie dolls because of all the pretty clothes they can dress them up in. Esther was chosen to be queen because she was so beautiful and I’m sure she had no shortage of beautiful clothes to wear. However, soon after she was made queen, Esther was faced with a very hard choice: save her people and risk her own life or try to save her own life, knowing that her people would be killed. Esther chose to trust that if she did what was right and thought of others before even her own life, God would make a way for her and her people to be saved.
Bible Lesson: Esther 4:1-5:3
Main Point: When I play, I can remember God will always make a way.

5. Mr. Potato Head – Imagine getting a Mr. Potato Head toy, but the only thing he came with was a bunch of feet! You could stick feet where his eyes are supposed to go or where his ears are supposed to go, but that would just get boring after a while. Mr. Potato Head is fun, because he has lots of different options for his eyes, ears, mouth and head. Paul teaches us that everyone in the church is a part of the Body of Christ. Just like our body has a lot of different parts that all work together, the church does too. People are all different, but God wants to use everyone’s unique gifts and abilities.
Bible Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:12-19
Main Point: When I play, I can remember God made me and has given me a part to play.

6. T-Rex – Dinosaur toys remind us of big, strong reptiles. The T-Rex is often thought of as one of the strongest dinosaurs there was. Samson was one of the strongest men in the Bible. He could have stayed that way, if he had obeyed God’s commands for him. But when Samson was tempted to hang out with people who didn’t want him to obey God, he gave in to temptation instead of running away and it cost him his strength.
Bible Lesson: Judges 16:15-22 Samson is captured by the Philistines
Main Point: When I play, I can remember that temptation means I should turn away.

7. Piggy Bank – Whether you have an actual piggy bank, or not, we can all be reminded to be generous with our money. The Bible tells us that the early church was willing to share what they had - money and things - with others who needed it.
Bible Lesson: Acts 4:32 The Believers Share What They Own
Main Point: When I play, I can remember to be generous with money.

8. Remote control car – Remote control cars are fun to play with and race around, but what happens after you keep them going at full speed for a long time? They start to slow down. That battery starts to slow down and they need to recharge. God knew that we as people need to recharge too. That’s why God said that the Sabbath day was to be a special day of rest. God said if he could create the world in 6 days, we should be able to do all of our work in 6 days. He wants us to use that 7th day as a day to recharge, and refocus on God and all he has done for us.
Bible Lesson: Genesis 2:2-3 and Exodus 20:8-11
Main Point: When I play, I can remember that every weekend should have a rest and recharge day.

9. Train Set – Every train set has an engine. The engine is the head of the train and pulls all the other cars. On a toy train set though, what really pulls the cars? You do! The engine looks like the leader, but you are the one that gives it power. That’s kind of like how God used Moses to lead his people out of Egypt. Moses was the leader the people saw, but God is the one who put him that position and gave him the ability to do all the things he did.
Bible Lesson: Exodus 3:1-12 God speaks to Moses at the burning bush.
Main Point: When I play, I can remember if I trust God, He will lead the way.

10. Little Green Army Men – One thing that makes all soldiers work together so well is that during training there are many consequences if they disobey or make a mistake - push ups, sit ups, extra chores etc. This may seem mean, but it’s actually out of love because their instructors know that if they make that same mistake in battle it could cost them or a fellow soldier a lot more than some extra push ups. Paul tells us in Romans that there are consequences for our sin. The ultimate punishment for sin is that we will be separated from God forever. That’s why God allows us to experience other consequences for sin to try to warn us and cause us to turn to Jesus to be saved from that much worse consequence.
Bible Lesson: Romans 6:23 The consequence of sin.
Main Point: When I play, I can remember why there are consequences if I disobey.

11. Teddy Bear – Teddy bears are one of the first toys many kids will play with. They’re soft and cuddly enough that they can be given to even the littlest of kids to play with. When Jesus was born however, he probably didn’t have a teddy bear to play with and didn’t even have soft bed to lay in. When Jesus was born he was born in a barn and laid in a feeding bin for animals.
Bible Lesson: Luke 2:1-7 The Birth of Jesus
Main Point: When I play, I can remember that Jesus was born in the hay so I could be in heaven someday.

12. Squeaky Toy – We all have a had a toy that squeaks and makes a lot of noise - it might be a bath toy like a rubber duck or maybe it’s a dog toy. Toys that squeak and make a loud noise should remind us that if we know the good news that Jesus is our Savior who forgives our sins - we should make some noise to tell other people! Peter shows how he told a huge group of people the good news of Jesus in one of the first sermons he preached.
Bible Lesson: Peter preaches the gospel at pentecost
Main Point: When I play, I remember I can tell someone Jesus loves them today.

    Each Lesson Includes:

    • Make It Stick! Parent Sheet - so you can let mom and dad know what kids are learning each week and look like a rockstar teacher who's thought of everything.
    • Memory Verse - so that you can make sure kids are getting Scripture in their minds and hearts every single week and you can feel like each lesson was a success even when it seems like 90% of your lesson time is spent saying things like "calm down", "let's be quiet", "hands to yourself!"
    • Skit or Puppet Show - so you have a way to easily connect the lesson with your hands-on and visual learners. No drama team? No problem! Just hand the script to the kids. They'll have a blast and think you're the coolest.
    • Craft Activity - so you can give kids a physical reminder of the Bible lesson (and give yourself an activity to keep them busy until mom and dad come back!)
    • Game - so kids don't leave and say church was BORING! Games are so important to help keep kids engaged. Our large group games always include a "What's The Point" section to help you connect the game to the lesson.
    • Large Group Lesson - so you can present the Bible story in a clear and fun way, which means now you can enjoy Saturday nights instead of stressing over putting a lesson together!
    • Small-Group Discussion - so you can find out who was paying attention and who was talking to their neighbor.  Just kidding, this is a great way for you to build deeper relationships with your kiddos after each lesson, which means you're going to care about them so much you'll cry like a baby when they graduate and go to middle school :(
    • More! - Yes, there is even more than all of that so that you can easily put together the perfect lesson for your ministry each weekend, which means no more agonizing over how to adjust complicated lesson plans.
