Christmas Object Lesson Script

(Keep the base hidden to start.)

How many of you have Christmas trees up at your house? Christmas trees are wonderful symbols of the season, full of reminders about the first Christmas. But there's one part of the Christmas tree that is more important than any other. Can you tell me what it is? It's not the lights, or ornaments, or even the angel or star on top of the tree.

(Show the tree base.)

Surprised you, didn't I? Most of you probably never look at the Christmas tree base. We only see it when we're putting the tree up ot taking it down. Most of the time it's hidden by the tree and the tree skirt. But without the base, the tree wouldn't stand, the ornaments and lights wouldn't stay up ... and we'd have a big mess in our living room.

There are so many things that happen at Christmas, it's easy to overlook one other important part of the season. We get so excited about time off from school, presents, Santa, family and parties, it's easy to forget about the baby Jesus. But without Jesus, there would be no Christmas. His birth was so important, Isaiah wrote about it centuries before it occurred: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

This Christmas, I want to urge you to look behind the lights, the ornaments, the presents, and the tree. Look to the foundation of Christmas and our faith: Jesus. Let's remember what Christmas is really about, and thank him for the gift he gave us!
