What King David Did (and Did Not) Do!
The life of King David was one of the most fascinating stories in the Bible. David was a warrior and a poet. He was a man after God’s heart, yet he also succumbed to sin. In this series, kids will get a detailed picture of the whole man and the God who walked with him.

Lesson 1: Dave Did Stand Out
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1-13, David Anointed

Objective: Kids will learn “God has a plan and a purpose for my life.”
Lesson 2: Dave Did Please the King
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:14-23, David in Saul’s Service
At times, King Saul was tormented in his soul. When David would play his harp for King Saul, he would be soothed. God has given each of us gifts and talents that we can use to serve him.
Objective: Kids will learn “God wants me to use my talents to serve him.”
Lesson 3: Dave Did Have a Giant Problem
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:32-49, David and Goliath
The whole of Israel’s army feared the Philistine giant, Goliath, and refused to face him in battle. But David did not fear. His eyes were not on the giant, but on the mighty God who was on Israel’s side.
Objective: Kids will learn “God is bigger than any problem I face.”
Lesson 4: Dave Did Make Friends…And an Enemy
Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:1-9, Saul’s Growing Jealousy
After defeating Goliath, David was put in charge of Saul’s army. While there, David found a great friendship with the king’s son, Jonathan. At the same time, Saul grew more and more jealous of David, to the point of making David his enemy.
Objective: Kids will learn “Godly friendships are worth making and growing.”
Lesson 5: Dave Did Run For His Life
Scripture: 1 Samuel 20:16-42, David and Jonathan
Saul grew to hate David and wanted to kill him. It was time for David to flee. With the help of God and his friend Jonathan, David was able to make it out of the king’s palace safely.
Objective: Kids will learn “God guides us and protects us.”
Lesson 6: Dave Did NOT Take Revenge
Scripture: 1 Samuel 24:1-19, David Spares Saul’s Life
When Saul went into that cave, he had no idea that David and his men were hiding out there. It was the perfect time for David to take his revenge on King Saul. Instead, David had mercy and compassion on Saul, recognizing that it is God’s job alone to enact revenge.
Objective: Kids will learn “God calls us to show mercy and compassion.”
Lessons 7-12:
Memory Verse: “You give me strength. I sing praise to you. God, you are like a fort to me. You are my God, and I can depend on you.” Psalm 59:17 (NIRV)
Lesson 7: Dave Did (Finally) Become King
Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1-5, David Becomes King of Israel
David was pretty young when the prophet Samuel anointed him king. But David did not become king right away. It took many years – and many trials – for David to see the promise of God come to pass. We must trust that God will fulfill his promises in his time, not in our time.
Objective: Kids will learn “God always fulfills his promises.”
Lesson 8: Dave Did Praise God
Scripture: 2 Samuel 6:12-22, David Dances
The ark of the covenant belonged in the city of Jerusalem, but it had been in other places for many years. When David and his men finally brought the ark back to Jerusalem, he was so overjoyed that he praised God with dancing.
Objective: Kids will learn “God loves when we praise him with joy and excitement.”
Lesson 9: Dave Did Take Care of Others
Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:1-13, David and Mephibosheth
King David learned that his old friend Jonathan had a son. Mephibosheth was crippled and did not have the means to take care of himself. King David used his power to make sure that Mephibosheth and his family were taken care of.
Objective: Kids will learn “God desires that we use what we have to serve others.”
Lesson 10: Dave Did NOT Go to War
Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:1-5 and 11:14-27, David and Bathsheba
David was not where he was supposed to be. In the time when kings went off to war, David stayed at home. While there, he found himself tempted. King David sinned and then tried to cover up his sin by sinning some more. His actions were not pleasing to God.
Objective: Kids will learn “God wants us to flee from sin.”
Lesson 11: Dave Did Ask for Forgiveness
Scripture: 2 Samuel 12:1-13, Nathan Confronts David

Lesson 12: Dave Did Say Goodbye
Scripture: 1 Kings 2:1-12, David Says Goodbye
