Pride is Nothing to Play Around With.

The life of Jacob is a shining example of what can happen when God transforms us from being prideful people to humble. Jacob learned that pride is nothing to play around with.

Toys and Bible Stories Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview

Lessons 1-4:

Memory Verse:

“If you are proud, you will be destroyed. If you are proud, you will fall.”  Proverbs 16:18 (NIRV)

Sporky
Scripture: Genesis 25:21-28, The Birth of Jacob and Esau
Sporky is two very different utensils – a spoon and a fork – joined together. Even before Esau and Jacob were born, their parents were told that they would be very different people, and that the older would serve the younger. We should be humble realizing that God knows everything about us from the very beginning.
Objective: Kids will say “God has my entire life in his hands.”

Sheriff Would He?
Scripture: Genesis 25:29-34, Esau Sells His Birthright
The sheriff knows the rules and lives by them. In Jewish culture, the birthright was very important and was not taken likely. When Jacob offered to give Esau stew in exchange for his birthright, it raised the question, “why would he do something so foolish?”
Objective: Kids will say “I will have gratitude for God’s good gifts.”

Mr. Tater Face
Scripture: Genesis 27:1-29, Jacob Receives Isaac's Blessing
Someone has wandered off with Mr. Tater Face's eyeballs, making it impossible for him to see. When Isaac was very old and could not see well, Jacob tricked him into giving a blessing intended for Esau.
Objective: Kids will say “I will not let pride cause me to lie.”

Space Ranger Beyond
Scripture: Genesis 28:10-22, Jacob's Ladder
Space Ranger Beyond has been to places others can only imagine. While Jacob was running for his life, God gave him an incredible vision that others would never see, which caused him to turn from his pride and choose another way.
Objective: Kids will say “I will walk with God in humbleness.”

Lessons 5-8:

Memory Verse:

“So make yourselves humble. Put yourselves under God’s mighty hand. Then he will honor you at the right time.” 1 Peter 5:6 (NIRV)

T-Wrecks
Scripture: Genesis 29:13-27, Laban, Leah & Rachel
T-Wrecks looks tough, but what you see isn't what you get. He's gentle and a little scared. Jacob fell in love with Rachel and wanted to marry her. But at his wedding, things weren't as they appeared, and Jacob actually married Rachel's sister Leah. Laban showed himself to be a prideful, dishonest man.
Objective: Kids will say “I will be honorable even when those around me are not.”

Green Fighting Men
Scripture: Genesis 30:30-43, Laban's Jealousy
Little green fighting men are all over the playroom. You can't turn around without seeing one. Laban was green with envy over Jacob's success. Every time he turned around, Laban showed his true colors. Laban's pride would not allow him to just enjoy his son-in-law's success.
Objective: Kids will say “I will celebrate when others succeed.”

Twisty Dog
Scripture: Genesis 32:22-30, Jacob Wrestles With God
Don't play too rough with Twisty Dog, or his coiled center might be all kinked up and twisted. One night, Jacob got all twisted up and turned around as he wrestled with God. In the end, Jacob received the blessing he desired.
Objective: Kids will say “I want to receive the blessings that can only come from God.”

Messy Bessy the Cowgirl
Scripture: Genesis 33:1-12, Esau and Jacob Reunite
You can always expect a rip roaring time when you play with Messy Bessy the cowgirl. Jacob did not know what to expect when he saw his brother again for the first time. Would it be a roaring, rowdy reunion? Or would it turn into an ugly mess? When the two brothers saw one another, Esau chose forgiveness over pride and bitterness. His Christ-like example of grace probably left an impression on Jacob’s son Joseph who would one day have a chance to extend that same grace to his brothers.
Objective: Kids will say “God can forgive and heal our pride and bitterness.”
