Many Writers, One Author

The books of the Bible were written over thousands of years by many writers. But these books are held together by this truth: God was the true Author of his Scripture.

Bible Zoo Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview

Memory Verse For Lessons 1-4:

“God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. ” 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIRV)

Lessons 1-4:

God
Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-4:2, All Scripture is God-breathed
The Bible was written by many people over a very long span of time, but ultimately, those words were given to them by God. Our study of the Bible authors must start with an understanding that Scripture is God’s word.
Objective: Kids will learn “The Bible is God’s word.”

Moses – The Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy)
Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:1-22, The Ten Commandments
Tradition tells us that Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament. These books are called the Torah, or the Law. Moses introduces us to the truth of God’s perfection and the perfect standard that he wants his people to live by.
Objective: Kids will learn “God gave his people the Law to help them follow Him.”

Unknown, Ezra and Nehemiah – History (Joshua through Esther)
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 34:14-19, 34:29-32, The Law Found
While Ezra wrote some of them (1 & 2 Chronicles and Ezra), and Nehemiah wrote one (Nehemiah), many of the authors of the history books are unknown. But through the history books we see that even though they had the Law, the people of God were never able to truly live by God’s perfect standard. Still God was at work in their lives.
Objective: Kids will learn “The history authors show us how God is at work in every generation.”

Many Authors – Poetry and Wisdom (Job through Song of Solomon)
Scripture: Psalm 19, Precious Word of God
The book of Psalms had many authors, as did Proverbs. They all wrote to show us the beauty of God and his Law, and the wisdom of living for Him.
Objective: Kids will learn “The poetry authors show us the beauty and wisdom of living for God.”

Memory Verse For Lessons 5-8:

“Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.” Psalm 119:105 (NIRV)

Lessons 5-8:

Name That Prophet – Major Prophets (Isaiah through Daniel)
Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-3, Year of the Lord's Favor
The authors of the books of the major prophets have their names written right on them (Jeremiah writing Lamentations). Each of the prophets – major and minor – reveal our inability to live by God’s standard and point us to a coming Messiah, who would save us from our sins.
Objective: Kids will learn “The prophets point us to Jesus.”

Name That Prophet 2 – Minor Prophets (Hosea through Malachi)
Scripture: Micah 6:1-8, Walk Humbly With God
The authors of the books of the minor prophets also have their names written right on them. These authors saw the corruption around them and challenged the people to turn from their wicked ways and reject sin.
Objective: Kids will learn “The prophets teach us to turn from sin.”

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – The Gospels (Matthew through John)
Scripture: Luke 4:16-30, Jesus Rejected
The Gospel authors show us that Jesus is the Messiah that the prophets promised would come. While some will reject Jesus, those who put their faith in him will find forgiveness and life.
Objective: Kids will learn “The Gospels show us what Jesus is like.”

Luke Again – History Again (Acts)
Scripture: Acts 8:26-39, Philip and the Ethiopian
Luke wrote the story of the early church in the book of Acts. Here we see how the world changes when we share the name of Jesus.
Objective: Kids will learn “In Acts, Luke shows us how the church was born and grew.”

Memory Verse For Lessons 9-12:

“Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.” Psalm 119:105 (NIRV)

Lessons 9-12:

Paul – Letters From Paul (Romans through Philemon)
Scripture: Philippians 3:10-12, Pressing On
Paul wrote many letters to churches and to individuals. In his letters, he encourages us to keep walking with Jesus and to keep pressing on.
Objective: Kids will learn “Paul’s letters encourage us to press on and keep living for Jesus.”

James, Peter, John, and Jude – The Other Letters (Hebrews through Jude)
Scripture: Hebrews 11:24-12:2, Hall of Faith
We don’t know who wrote the book of Hebrews, but the other letters have the names of the authors on them. These authors join a long list of those who walked with God and helped to change the world. Each of us who walks with Jesus joins that list too!
Objective: Kids will learn “The letter writers show us the power of our faith in Jesus.”

John – Apocalyptic (Revelation)
Scripture: Revelation 21:1-4, New Heaven and New Earth
The disciple John wrote the book of Revelation, which describes the struggles and the hardship that will come one day. In the end, however, we have the assurance that Jesus is always in control and a bright eternity awaits those who follow Him.
Objective: Kids will learn “In Revelation, John shows us that Jesus is always in control.”

God and His People
Scripture: John 21:25 & 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, God and Man
The Bible is the word of God. God worked with many people to make his Scripture a reality. God continues to work through his followers to proclaim the name of Jesus in this world.
Objective: Kids will learn “God works through people to proclaim Jesus.”
