Kablooey Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview

Memory Verse:

“Satan will be let out of his prison… But fire from heaven came down on the attacking armies and consumed them.” Revelation 20:7b, 9b (NLT)

Lessons:

The Ground Up Golden god
Scripture: Exodus 32
Moses went up on the mountain to receive the law from God. But he was gone longer than the Israelites expected. Unable to see Moses or God, they decided to place their faith in something that they could see. They made a golden idol like the ones they were forced to worship as slaves in Egypt. When people don’t know what to do, they do what they know. Moses returned with God’s commandments, to find the Israelites worshiping the idol. At this, he had the idol ground into gold powder and mixed into water, which he forced them to drink. Sometimes when God seems distant, we are tempted to put our faith in worldly things. But if we trust God, we will wait patiently for Him.
Objective: Kids will learn that we can only put our hope in God; not worldly things.

Totaled Tablets
Scripture: Exodus 32 & 34
Moses returned to find the Israelites worshiping a golden calf, and in a moment of anger he smashed the tablets that bore the Ten Commandments. The Israelites failed by getting impatient and worshiping a false idol. Moses failed by losing his temper and smashing the ten commandments. But God called Moses to come up the mountain a second time, to meet him again, and to provide a second set of written laws. Even when we blow it, God gives us second chances.
Objective: Kids will learn that God gives us second chances.

Baal’s Blasted Altar
Scripture: Judges 6:25-32
The people of Gideon’s community worshiped Baal and Asherah. On a hillside looking over the town, they had made a Baal altar and an Asherah pole. God’s first assignment for Gideon was to destroy the Baal altar and Asherah pole, and build an altar to the One True God beside it. At this time, it was normal for the Israelites to worship YHWH, and other gods as well. Gideon’s actions were a statement that God is to be worshiped instead of other false gods; not in addition to them.
Objective: Kids will learn, God is worshipped instead; not “in addition”

Smashing Statues
Scripture: 2 Kings 22 & 23
Josiah discovered the books of the law, which had been lost for generations; buried deep in a cluttered storage area of the temple. When he heard the words of the law, Josiah realized that the nation had been sinning against God in many ways; especially worshiping false idols. Josiah repented, had the law read to everybody, and resolved to follow God. Then he went on a smashing spree – destroying idols, shrines, and pagan altars. Josiah’s convictions led him to take action.
Objective: Kids will learn that repentance leads to action.

The Beautifully Broken Bottle
Scripture: Matthew 26:6-13, Luke 7:36-50, John 12:1-7
Jesus was eating at the house of a pharisee named Simon. When a woman with a sinful past showed up, broke an expensive bottle of perfume open, and anointed Jesus with it, her act instigated a lot of criticism. The pharisee thought that if Jesus knew really knew who she was, He wouldn’t have allowed her near Him. The disciples criticized her for being wasteful; dumping out an estimated $50,000 worth of perfume all at once. But Jesus praised her for giving her best.
Objective: Kids will learn that jesus loves when we give Him our best.

The Totally Torn Tapestry
Scripture: Matthew 27:50-51
Historically, the division between God and humanity has been symbolized in different ways. After the fall, it was represented by angels who blocked the entrance to the Garden of Eden. In the wilderness, God’s throne was the Ark of the Covenant which could only be approached by certain individuals, and could never be touched. Finally, the curtain in the Temple represented the division between God and humankind. And at the very moment that Jesus died as the final sacrifice for our sins, the curtain was torn from top-to-bottom. Jesus came to destroy what separated us from God.
Objective: Kids will learn that Jesus reunites us with God.

The Toppled Temple
Scripture: Matthew 24:1
The Jewish Temple was significant for many reasons. It was understood as where God dwelled among humans, and functioned as the center of Jewish religious and political power. The Temple’s architecture was an embodiment of hierarchy and exclusivity. Gentiles were not allowed to enter beyond the exterior courtyard. Women were not allowed to enter past the outer court. Most men were limited to the Court of Israel. Only priests could enter the Court of Priests. Only a high priest could enter the Holy Place. And only one specially selected High Priest could enter into God’s presence in the Most Holy Place once per year. When His followers started marveling over the Temple’s beauty, Jesus informed them that it would be destroyed.
Objective: Kids will learn that Jesus tears down the barriers that divide.

The Severely Smashed Ship
Scripture: Acts 27 & Acts 28:1-10
The story of Paul’s shipwreck is a testament to what it looks like to trust in God’s faithfulness.
Objective: Kids will learn that God is with us through life’s storms.
