Moses went up on the mountain to receive the law from God. But he was gone longer than the Israelites expected. Unable to see Moses or God, they decided to place their faith in something that they could see. They made a golden idol like the ones they were forced to worship as slaves in Egypt. When people don’t know what to do, they do what they know. Moses returned with God’s commandments, to find the Israelites worshiping the idol. At this, he had the idol ground into gold powder and mixed into water, which he forced them to drink. Sometimes when God seems distant, we are tempted to put our faith in worldly things. But if we trust God, we will wait patiently for Him.
