Fun & Engaging Holy Spirit Crafts for Kids

Specific Bible stories or holiday themes often inspire Sunday School crafts. One subject that is sometimes missed is the topic of the Holy Spirit. This may be because it's difficult to represent the Holy Spirit through arts and crafts, the concept of the Holy Spirit is difficult to comprehend, or both.

Today, we'll provide excellent ways to teach about the Holy Spirit through hands-on crafts. This fun and engaging experience will reinforce biblical lessons on God's Spirit in a meaningful way. The more interactive our lessons are, the better kids will comprehend and remember what they've learned. Creating Holy Spirit crafts and lessons is a great way to accomplish this.

4 Tips for Making Holy Spirit Crafts Interactive & Meaningful

  1. Pair each craft with a Bible verse.
  2. Encourage discussion about how the Holy Spirit helps us in daily life.
  3. Incorporate the craft mid-lesson to give kids a hands-on activity while they are learning.
  4. Allow kids to add their creative expression and details to their crafts.

4 Holy Spirit Crafts for Kids

Craft 1: The Holy Spirit Is Our Helper

One of the ways the Holy Spirit is described in the Bible is our "helper." Jesus went to heaven to be with the Father, but He left his Spirit to be with us on earth. Followers of Jesus receive the Holy Spirit when they become believers and ask for forgiveness for their sins. To support kids' understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, we can create a craft around the theme of a helper.

Craft Bible Verse:

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and remind you of all that I said to you." (John 14:26, ESV)

Supplies

Markers

White Paper

Instructions:

  1. Ask kids to fold their paper into quarters to make four sections on their page, and then open the paper back up again.
  2. Next, have the kids label one of the four sections "Physical Helpers in the Body." Then, the kids can draw different helpful organs in their bodies that help them function, such as the heart, brain, eyes, etc.
  3. Tell kids to label a second section as "Emotional Helpers. Then, have them draw faces with different feelings they have - happy, sad, scared, or angry.
  4. Label the third section, "Helpful People in My Life." In this section, ask the children to draw or write down the names of people in their lives who are helpful to them (Dad, Mom, brother, teacher, etc.).
  5. Finally, ask the kids what or who they think the last section is for. Explain that people are physical, emotional, and also spiritual. Not only do we need help from our hearts, our emotions, and our relationships with people around us, but we are given God's Holy Spirit in us to help us!
  6. Ask them to write, "The Holy Spirit is my helper from God!" in the final section. They can draw a heart, star, or whatever they think will best represent God's Spirit to them. Explain how all of these parts and relationships with other people and God are important to help us live our lives well.

Craft 2: The Holy Spirit's Work in Us

There are many ways the Holy Spirit helps us in our walk with Jesus. He comforts us when we mourn, convicts us of our sins, and encourages us to repent; he guides, teaches, and heals us. He also provides hope, gives gifts, and so much more. Having a relationship with Jesus gives us access to the Holy Spirit in these ways.

Supplies:

Washable tempera or acrylic paints

Water

Dish Soap

Straws

Cardstock paper

Small containers

Markers

Instructions:

  1. Mix soap, paint, and water in small containers. Pass out the containers to each kid, along with a sheet of cardstock paper and a straw.
  2. Tell the kids to blow bubbles into their containers with their straws. Lie the paper on top of the container to get the bubble prints on the paper. Repeat until the paper is covered with multi-color bubble prints. Have kids switch colors with friends to get the chance to use multiple colors, but be sure to have them keep their straws!
  3. Once the bubble print covers the kids' papers, allow the paper to air dry as you teach us the ways the Holy Spirit works in us. Reference places in scripture where it explains how the Holy Spirit works.
  4. Finally, once the pages have dried, have kids write inside of the different bubbles with ways the Holy Spirit helps us. (E.g. The Holy Spirit convicts; the Holy Spirit directs; the Holy Spirit comforts, etc.)
  5. Ask kids to write THE HOLY SPIRIT at the top of their page.

Craft 3: Who Is the Holy Spirit?

As we teach about who the Holy Spirit is, we would be remiss if we didn't explain that the Spirit is God's Spirit with us.

Explain to the children that God is made up of three parts: the Father, the Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Adam and Eve were with God in the Garden of Eden, but sin separated them from Him. Years later, Jesus was born. One of Jesus' names was "Emanuel," which means God with us. Jesus was with us on the earth and lived among us. Once Jesus took our punishment for sin on the cross and rose from the dead, he had to return to the Father in heaven to sit at his right side. But he didn't leave us alone; he left his Spirit with us. The Holy Spirit is God living with us!

Jesus made the way for God to be with us again on earth. One day, in heaven, we will be with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who make up one God. This craft will provide a way for kids to understand this in-depth concept better.

Craft Bible Verses:

Genesis 3:23-24, Matthew 1:23, Matthew 28:20

Supplies:

Colored paper

Tape

Instructions:

  1. Show the kids how to fold their paper into a fan by folding it one way, flipping the paper over, and folding it the other way, back and forth, until the entire page looks like an accordion.
  2. Ask the kids to tape one end together to help give it the shape of a fan.

Discussion:

Discuss with the kids how the Holy Spirit is God's presence with us. Instruct kids to start fanning themselves. Ask if they can see the air that is making the wind. Then, ask if they can see the Holy Spirit. Explain how the Holy Spirit is like the wind that we cannot see but is with us, and we know it because we can feel it.

Talk about ways we can feel the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives through prayer, through Him speaking to our hearts, and more. Remind kids that the Holy Spirit is God because God is made up of three parts. God promises never to leave us, and we can depend on Him. We don't have to see Him to know He is with us, just like the wind!

Craft 4: The Dos and Don'ts of the Holy Spirit

A lesson not often taught is the "dos" and "don'ts" of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises never to leave or forsake us, and His Spirit will remain with us once we've accepted Him into our hearts. But the Bible also clearly explains that there are ways to keep the Holy Spirit from doing the work He is supposed to be doing in us. The earlier we teach this to our children, the better they will understand the importance of their relationship with God and how it affects their daily lives.

Supplies:

Small envelopes (2 for each student)

Construction paper

Scissors

White paper

Glue sticks

Colored pencils

Instructions:

  1. Pass out the envelopes so that each child has 2. Have kids label one envelope, Dos, and one envelope, Don'ts.
  2. As you teach your lesson, ask kids to write down as many Do and Don't words as they can: It's good to agree with the Holy Spirit by obeying God, following where the Spirit leads us, trusting, etc. Things we don't want to do is grieve, disobey, or quench the Spirit. Explain what these terms mean and give examples of what could cause it. For instance, sinning against someone grieves the Spirit, but saying you are sorry and asking for forgiveness is good. Another example is quenching the Spirit by not believing, but believing God's word is good!
  3. After kids have created their lists, ask them to cut them out and put them in the correct envelope.
  4. Then, ask them to glue both envelopes to construction paper and label it "Working WITH the Holy Spirit" at the top.

Discussion:

Discuss with your kids how doing the "don'ts" affects our relationship with God and keeps the Holy Spirit from fully functioning well in our lives! We want God's good influence and His help, and the best way to get that is by trusting, obeying, and encouraging other believers in their walk with Jesus too!

Final Thoughts

Understanding who the Holy Spirit is and how He works in and through us is an essential part of the Christian faith. We rely on God's help through the Holy Spirit!

As Sunday School teachers and Children Ministry leaders, we can help kids learn about God's Spirit, who dwells in them, and give them the tools they need to have that close and healthy relationship with Him.
